Climbing the tides

A lot of people would stay away from the coast when it’s overcast and gloomy, but sometimes I actually prefer it! You don’t feel the heat wearing you down while going for walks, and your photos won’t have harsh shadows or washed out colors. Plus there’s just something magical about a stormy coast.

The tide pools at the Cabrillo National Monument weren’t stormy when I visited recently, but it was gloomy and cool. Perfect!

For $5 admission into the park, it’s tough to beat as a place to explore and get ‘away from it all’ while staying close to home. There’s loads of parking, and twice a year they open up the lighthouse all the way to the top! The tide pools are also a great area for kids (young and old) to get a little dirty as they walk the hilly trails and climb on giant rocks. I even stumbled into a hidden cave with a couple of crabs!
